Kushti (also written as Kusti) is the traditional form of wrestling
practiced in India for thousands of years. The wrestlers are called
Pehelwan and they train in a traditional gymnasium called
Akhada (or Akhara).
Indian style wrestling is fought on mud (mitti) and follows ancient
rules of the sport. It combines techniques of grappling, throws,
pins and submission holds unique to the Indian subcontinent.
The Hind Kesari — meaning "Lion of India" — is the title given
to the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of Indian style wrestling.
It is a title of supreme honour, strength and national pride.
